Volunteers-in-residence : Civic Service for education
The Civic Service is a scheme that allows young people from 16 to 25 (30 for those with disabilities) to get involved in an organization or a public service.
Afev is one of the major providers of Civic Service opportunities. It has welcomed more than 9500 young volunteers since this scheme was created in 2010. Acting as a complementary organization to public schooling, Afev allows its volunteers to be a tangible contribution to the fight against educational inequality.
At Afev, more than half of our Civic Service volunteers get involved with pupils and teachers through our Volunteer-sin-Residence program. This program refers to artists-in-residence, who are welcomed in a specific place to work on a project. At Afev, each volunteer comes to work several times a week, throughout the whole year, in a specific school, most often located in a priority education area. These youth act as educational third parties during both school hours and after-school hours. By leading missions built in partnership between Afev and the teaching teams, volunteers participate in improving atmospheres in schools.
