High social impact programs for young people who want to get involved

Over 30 years of presence in the field, Afev’s actions have diversified, adapting to regions and partners to take action where needed, while remaining truthful to simple principles : help people in need, get involved in disadvantaged areas and mix people.
Afev’s programs now form a network of solidarity that can change people’s lives in working-class areas.
Afev offers students four ways to get involved, that can be combined :

Volunteer mentoring 2 hours a week

Every week, a student comes and helps a child or teenager, between 5 and 18 years old, at home or remotely. His/her intervention, based on games, talks and outings, is built from the child’s needs and covers more than just school work. Those partnerships help build self-esteem and offer a cultural opening to thousands of children and teenagers of disadvantaged areas.

Civic Service dedicated to educational actions

With the Volunteer-In-Residence program, a youth doing his or her Civic Service can get involved over the school year, up to 26 hours a week, in a school from a priority education area, on a project built in partnership between Afev and the educational team, according to specific context and needs. In schools, it can mean the connection between family and school, relating to books… In high schools, it can be working on improving the school atmosphere, preventing disengagement, helping course and career choices… These youths often have a mentoring mission as well and become go-to persons for the organization’s volunteers.

Choose a Solidarity Project House Share

In 40 cities, Solidarity House Shares Kaps allow young people below 30, studying, working or in Civic Service, to choose an affordable home share in the heart of a working-class area. In collaboration with their house mates, they commit to creating community projects that create social connections between residents ; for instance by organizing neighbors get-togethers, creating community spaces and gardens. Kapsers also offer youth mentoring in their area.

Solidarity Apprentices : preparing unqualified youths to apprenticeship

To help unqualified youths to “engage” again, Afev offers them a 6 months contract as Solidarity Apprentices. The goal is to prepare them for apprenticeship and help them enter a workplace. From January till July, 26 hours a week, these youths follow a journey mixing solidarity missions around various themes (ecology, solidarity, community, heritage restoration etc.), training courses and immersions in different work environments, as well as workshops to develop their knowledge and skills.

Démo'Campus : open the doors to higher education

Supporting young people in their orientation is a real priority for Afev. In order to open up the field of possibilities, to fight against social-cultural determinism and to help each young person find their way, Afev deploys different methods of action in terms of orientation: home mentoring, workshops and collective presentations in school, etc.
