Disparities exist in access to apprenticeship

Apprenticeship is a way to learn that combines hands-on experience (for instance, working in a company) and theory (attending classes). It is thus a dynamic method of education with excellent results in helping youth find a job !
However, apprenticeship remains selective as students need to be recruited by a company. Many candidates fail to get a contract and cannot therefore begin their training.
What is more, the development of apprenticeship remains unequal because it is mainly targeted at college level courses. Very few youth without a high school diploma even attempt it.

Getting youth ready for apprenticeship through solidarity commitment

To help youth who didn’t graduate access apprenticeship schemes, we have developed “Solidarity Apprentices”, a preparatory pathway to apprenticeship in close collaboration with our partners.

How does it work ?

During 6 months, the young “Solidarity Apprentices” get involved in Afev (mostly through Civic Service) and follow a path including :

Solidarity missions to develop their skills around different themes : ecology (construction projects, vegetable gardens…), solidarity (food distribution), social cohesion (connecting with isolated people), heritage restoration projects.
Basic skills training (first aid certificate, health workshops…).
Discovering different jobs through immersion programs in companies, visits in youth training centers…
After 6 months, the students who want to go further can receive mentorship to help them integrate the company they will work for.

Each program involves 10 participants and is coordinated by a professional.
